Mysomero is committed to protecting your personal information and complying with Uganda’s Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019.

1. Who We Are

Mysomero ("we", "us", "our") is an AI-powered educational platform for Ugandan secondary school students, built to help learners study the NCDC curriculum more effectively. We are based in Uganda and operate the website and services available at mysomero.com.

For purposes of the Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019 (Act No. 9 of 2019), Mysomero is the data controller responsible for your personal information.

2. What This Policy Covers

This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect about you, why we collect it, how we use and protect it, who we may share it with, and what rights you have over your own information.

It applies to all visitors, registered students, parents, and school administrators who use Mysomero.

By creating a Mysomero account, you confirm that you have read and understood this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use our services.

3. Information We Collect

3.1 Information you give us directly

  • Account details: your full name, email address, and password when you register.
  • School information: the name of your school, your class or level (e.g. S3, S5 Sciences), and your subject selections.
  • Subscription and payment information: when you subscribe to a paid plan, we collect billing details. Payment card data is processed directly by our payment provider and is never stored on Mysomero's servers.
  • Parent or guardian details: if a parent registers on behalf of a student, we collect the parent's name, email address, and the relationship to the student.
  • Communications: any messages, feedback, or support requests you send us.

3.2 Information generated as you use the platform

  • Learning activity: questions you attempt, subjects and topics you study, quiz scores, correct and incorrect answers, and weak topic patterns identified during your sessions.
  • Progress and gamification data: your XP points, level, badges earned, study streaks, and leaderboard position.
  • Session data: dates and times of study sessions, features used, and how long you spend on each topic.
  • Device and technical data: browser type, device type (phone, tablet, computer), operating system, and IP address.

3.3 What we do not collect

We do not collect your national ID number, physical location beyond what you volunteer, or any biometric data.

We do not collect data about your religious beliefs, political opinions, or health status.

5. Children and Students Under 18

Mysomero is designed for secondary school students, many of whom are under 18 years of age. We take the protection of younger users very seriously, in line with Section 8 of the DPPA 2019.

Students under 18 should register only with the knowledge and permission of a parent or guardian.

By ticking the consent checkbox at registration, the person creating the account confirms that this permission has been given.

We do not knowingly collect personal data from a child without appropriate parental consent.

If you are a parent and believe your child has registered without your knowledge, please contact us at info@mysomero.com and we will promptly review and, where appropriate, remove the account.

Parent accounts allow a parent or guardian to register on behalf of their child, monitor their child's progress, and manage the subscription. This is our recommended approach for users under 18.

6. AI-Powered Learning and Google's Involvement

Mysomero uses Google's Gemini AI to power features such as personalised explanations, topic recommendations, re-teaching after wrong answers, and study session planning.

This means that certain learning data — including the questions you ask, the topics you study, and your quiz responses — is sent to Google's AI systems for processing.

This processing is done to deliver the core educational service you signed up for.

Google processes this data as our data processor, under a formal data processing agreement, and is not permitted to use your data for Google's own advertising or commercial purposes.

Important — cross-border data processing (Section 19, DPPA 2019): Google's AI infrastructure operates on servers located outside Uganda.

By using Mysomero, you consent to your learning data being processed in those locations.

Google maintains internationally recognised data protection standards (including ISO 27001 and SOC 2 certifications) that we consider equivalent to the protections provided by the DPPA 2019.

7. Who Else We Share Your Data With

We do not sell your personal information to anyone.

We share it only as described below:

  • Google LLC (AI processing): as described in Section 6 above.
  • Payment processors: when you pay for a subscription, your payment details are handled by our payment gateway provider.
  • Your school (if applicable): if your school has an institutional account, designated school administrators may be able to see your progress and study activity.
  • Legal and regulatory authorities: we may disclose your information if required to do so by Ugandan law, court order, or a lawful request from the National Information Technology Authority (NITA-U).
  • Service providers: we use trusted third-party tools to operate the platform.

8. How Long We Keep Your Data

  • Active account data is retained for the full duration of your account.
  • If you delete your account, we will delete or anonymise your personal data within 30 days.
  • Financial and subscription records are retained for 7 years.
  • Consent records are retained for the life of the account plus 3 years.

When we no longer need your data, we will delete or de-identify it in a manner that prevents its reconstruction, in line with Section 18(5) of the DPPA 2019.

9. How We Protect Your Data

  • Encrypted data transmission (HTTPS/TLS).
  • Secure hashed storage of passwords.
  • Access controls for authorised personnel only.
  • Regular review of security practices.

No system is 100% secure.

In the unlikely event of a data breach, we will notify NITA-U immediately and notify affected users as directed by the Authority.
